A friend of mine with a music and other trivia blog, emailed me a 2-second bit of song and I (think) it was Janis Ian .. who did “At Seventeen”. I liked that song! I remember seeing a version on an early Saturday Night Live show and it was really soft and quiet, but you could still hear the emotion in the song. Looking for it on YouTube .. I couldn’t find that particular show… but I did find these. Enjoy~
Lots of Joy. And Memories. GREAT SITE! Check it out! Pictures. Videos. Stuff we used to watch on CBC Late Night, and music we actually listened to .. on vinyl 33-1/3″ (or even 78~)
This is an interesting song. It sung by Yukimi Nagano who is just a dreamy vocalist, but not really part of the “band”. Actually - there is no band .. it’s just two people from Sweden that are doing pretty amazing stuff with sounds.
Koop is Magnus Zingmark & Oscar Simonsson. When listening to Koops music it’s somehow easy to believe that it’s played by a small orchestra, but in fact the music is based on samples. Thousands of small clips from records puzzled together into new songs. All the drums, strings, horn sections and choires are actually sampled! This is a very time consuming way to make music (it’s one of the reasons it takes such long time to make a koop album), but it’s the only way to create the surreal Koop sound. One thing though, that for sure aren’t sampled, is the vocals. Many singers has blessed the Koop albums with their talent, and on Koop Islands the singers are : Yukimi Nagano, Ane Brun, Hilde-Louise Asbjornsen,Rob Gallagher and Mikael Sundin. Some fine musicians has also participated on the album playing solos, percussion and bass. Those are : Mattias Ståhl, Magnus Lindgren, Karl Frid, Nils Berg, Martin Höper, Ola Bothzén, Dan Berglund and Mats Lindfors. When playing live Koop transforms into a 7-9 piece swing orchestra including one or two singers, and the main mission is to make people move their feet. The line-up may vary from time to time so if you are looking for the personel on a specific concert please dont hesitate to drop a message on myspace. Koop them selves plays piano/accordion (Oscar), sampler (Magnus), and wear dresses.
I dunno … but the multiple arms effect is fascinating to me … what do you think? Neat, eh? It was just on “Ethnosonic” show on CityTV as I was doing a little work this morning …
When I grew up, I took piano lessons. I went as far as actually taking Grade 8 Royal Conservatory. After that, I felt that it took more time for me to practice than I was getting better and then concentrated on the Theory side of music. I remember a “grade V” but by the time I was in my 20’s and going to University, I went a different direction. Firstly, I tried to capitalize on getting “easy credits” by taking music courses at University, and then I just concentrated on playing keyboards in local bands and friends’ jamming in basements, and outdoor “pit parties” out in the country where I had lived with a few buddies of mine.
Two piano players had a great influence on me … The first was Fats Domino. who I actually met while working at a local cabaret here in Winnipeg (on Kennedy Street for other Winnipeger’s who remember that) and Oscar Peterson. My piano teacher and I ended up to be great acquaintances, and somewhat friends .. and although he tried to show me some of the greater classical pianists that would come to our Concert Hall .. I would make for him some “cassette” copies of both Fats and Oscar songs that I made from my record collection and he even appreciated both (I believe).
Just watched this movie again last night. IT’S A GREAT MOVIE! .. It’s in German, with subtitles, and basically repeats the same 20 minutes in 3 different scenarios .. with a killer soundtrack! Here are some amazing scenes from the movie that I found on YouTube .. but, I would recommend it for your Home Library.
Welcome to my RANT & RAVE blog - I only post things that I really really like, or I really really hate! Although, at times you might find some pretty weird stuff in here too :D More ..
