Yeah why he’s not a rock drummer. If he played rock’n'roll (which no doubt he could) then his solos would have a continuous underbeat and inner beat with different fills added in the same place but at different times. it’s all just timing. BUT since it is JAZZ and the musicianship that goes along with jazz, needs no or has a desire for a time signature.

One of the best and truest comments about drumming ever made on youtube. People who go around on videos just to bag on some legend’s chops are fools who likely can’t play at all. One Max Roach is worth 50 million generic modern elevator-fusion drummers.

@SiCmetalfan

You can also find video of Buddy Rich making mistakes in his solos. There’s no such thing as perfection. No one has or will ever attain it.

@ossiezig8

This solo is not remotely indicative of Roach’s unique approach to soloing. So I assume you’ve not listened to a lot of Max Roach and you’re taking this video as all you need to know in order to judge…drumming is about a lot more than chops.
Secondly, with the exception of Rich, the drummers you mentioned are fusion drummers. For straight up bop, Roach would’ve schooled Weckl and Mayer, who sound like stiffs when they play it.

@MarkR1957

Ugh! Nonsense! Rich is an all time great, but not the greatest of all time. Tony Williams, Billy Cobham and Joe Morello all could have given Rich a run for his money. And Max’s solos on the Rich vs. Roach album are much more musical than Rich’s. Rich was a showoff and a trick drummer (with undoubtedly phenomenal technique). Roach was a superior musician.

@frenulumforyou

Go listen to Thomas Lang and miss the entire point of music some more, please.

@TheLastPictureShow I’ve listened to plenty of Roach solos, Yes drumming is alot more than just chops, but if you are unable to play basic chops cleanly, evenly and without missing your target I would say that you are an amateur player at best. If you think Roach would’ve schooled Weckl or Mayer then I don’t think you are even worth arguing with…these guys were googles more advanced and developed than Roach. If ur against fusion, then listen to Morello or Bellson as examples of real drumming

@ossiezig8

I was specific about the area in which Roach would’ve schooled Weckl and Mayer—straight up bop. I stand by it, as neither of those drummers sound particularly great playing it. For all around chops, of course, Roach is not close to either of them. And I’m quite familiar with Morello and Bellson. “Real drumming” is not just stringing rudiments together at high speed to impress technique geeks.

@TheLastPictureShow Well it is all perception which is why they call it “Liberal Arts”. … I will say this though, there are few people in the world who can string high speed rudiments together which is why it is and always will be impressive to watch and listen to someone do it. If ur familiar with Bellson & Morello then you will know that they do much much more than that….both very musical drummers. Gavin Harrison is one of my favs, so I appreciate the creative musical approach.

I don’t think you are allowed to say that, are you? The Buddy Rich police will have you shot if they find that comment. You’ll be trying to tell us that he isn’t the greatest drummer that will ever exist, ever, next :-o

Don’t think the drums can put out that much energy in under 3 minutes

One of my favorite jazz drummers along with Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones and Rashied Ali.

Max Roach was a musician more than a drummer. He understands that the average listener doesn’t have the capability to understand why playing every single part of the set is good. But he does give them a taste before going back to their level of understanding. (Which he also shows that he can do whatever anyone else can)

@rith5 I think we should all should turn our backs on those. Ignore the IGNORANT.
I’m sitting here baffled, anyone who is a student of the drum, could find this man to be
flawed on a level to knock him down to a negative degree. Silly underdeveloped humans
. Go find out what really happens when you are fed only similac as a child. You get dummies.

The only negative thing about this video, is that it’s TOO SHORT!
