Guaranteed An Approximate Time For A Service Call?

in Thing That Grind My Gear

call HART crazy .. but

Well, my fancy schmancy furnace filter that I just replaced on June 1, 2006 and cost me $39.99 CDN got damaged from being in the 3 inches of water. Fortunately, I keep a bundle of those 3-packs for $1.99 filters so it’s not really that much of an issue.

What is an issue is that our Air Conditioner is on the fritz again. What is happening is that it is icing up and stops working. It has nothing to do with the flood in our basement yesterday, as it has been going on for about 2 weeks now. We put the air conditioning on, it cools the house down, it ices up, the house gets hot, we turn off the air conditioner, the ice melts, and repeat.

So, I called our friendly furnace company who installed our energy efficient furnace (in 1998) and modified our existing pre-1997 air conditioner to work with that new furnace. Besides their new annoying as hell way to answer the phone … here is how the conversation went this morning:

“Hello, and it’s a wonderful day out there today .. how can we help you in this wonderful day?”

*-gag-* Excuse me, it’s not that wonderful – we have no air conditioning, can you come out and service it?

Why, surely we can! Would you like our Guaranteed 1-Hour Service? It’s $129.99

Um .. well, it’s not really a rush .. how much is it for a normal service call?

Our normal service call, which is a guaranteed 4-hour service, is $99.99

* -cringe-* well, I have to step out later in the day and it’s supposed to be hot .. it’s 26c in our house and about 33c in my office here, where I work .. I need air conditioning! Okay! I’ll take the 1-hour service call!

Thank-You Sir … will Friday June 9th be okay?

.. WHAT THE F..? I’m hoping you are here by noon in the next hour …

Have you ever heard of anything so ridiculous? Apparently, they schedule appointments in advance, approximately for the time they tell you they will be there.

To me – that’s stupid. Really stupid. If you are scheduling an appointment 3 days in advance, you should expect that the person making the appointment will show up at the scheduled time of the appointment. Can you imagine if everyday people around the world did business this way? I don’t care how pleasant you think you are on the phone (and believe me – it’s not pleasant – it’s annoying waiting for you to read a typed greeting when I phoned you) .. when you schedule to meet people – that’s what “scheduling” is all about ..

So – they scheduled me on Friday June 9th, between the hours of 1pm and 5pm .. (because I took the normal 4-hour guarantee service). I’ve already decided that if they are not here by 2pm .. I’m not going to let them in my house, and tell them to F.O. and call somebody else. I don’t care if they have been the only company servicing my furnace and air conditioner for the past 10 years ..

… that’s crazy.
